This month, the state opened its new health insurance marketplace, called Covered California. It’s a way for people who are uninsured to purchase health insurance plans that meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

On opening day, Covered California was busy. The website saw almost a million hits, and close to 60,000 people tied up their phone lines.  Waits of over 30 minutes were common.

Each week, we’ll play you a sound recorded somewhere in the Bay Area. Your job? Listen to the sound (in the player above), figure out where it was recorded, and what exactly it is, then call us to let us know.

If you think you can identify this Audiograph sound of the week, call 415-264-7106. Also, tell us where to record next. We’ll give away a KALW t-shirt every week to one lucky caller.

High above the Bay, at the top of Mount Tam, is a little shack—up on stone tower, just that much higher above the peak where it sits.  It’s called the Gardner Lookout, and it’s one of two fire lookout towers in Marin County.

All week long we've been playing this sound, and asking you to guess what exactly it is and where exactly in the Bay Area we recorded it.

At its heart, California’s food economy is all about agriculture. Our state produces almost half of the fruits and vegetables consumed in the United States. In the Bay Area, one of our biggest crops is grapes. And right now, it’s harvest time-- it started on August 1st and could run through late fall.

A taste of Texas in Sacramento

Aug 27, 2013

This weekend, hundreds of people from across the state, and from as far away as Idaho, Oregon, and Washington State will be coming to Northern California to get a little taste of Texas. That’s because this weekend is the seventh annual Tejano Conjunto Festival in Sacramento, a celebration of Latino music from Texas that made its way across the West. Julie Caine and Lisa Morehouse visited a band playing the festival and bring us this preview.

Squeezebox Stories, hosted by Marco Werman of PRI’s The World, is a sound-rich, narrative-driven documentary exploring the social history, multicultural adaptation and musical variations of the accordion.

The accordion is about much more than the Polka; it’s one of the first global instruments. Played all over the world – everywhere from Italy to China to Zanzibar – the squeezebox is a great vehicle for telling immigration stories.

Earlier this month, students in Zoe Mullery’s creative writing class for San Quentin inmates held a reading of their work at the prison. The public was invited to the reading, and one of the audience members asked the inmates if they thought going to prison was the only way they could have changed their lives for the better.
