Steven has been with KALW News since it’s beginnings in 2004. His history, art and public interest stories have won awards for Breaking News, Feature Writing and Explanatory Journalism. Some of his reports have aired nationally on NPR.

He is responsible for The Source, a recurring feature on the origins of Bay Area place names. He also researches most of the listings for the Crosscurrents local music calendar and compiles the weekly online Cannabis News Round-up.

Today's Local Music: Kelly McFarling

The voice you’re hearing belongs to Kelly McFarling. This song is titled, “Atlanta,” which is her hometown. She came to San Francisco a few years ago, thinking she might audition for the Opera. But instead she has become what the East Bay Express calls “one of the Bay Area’s most promising singer-songerwriters.”

Kelly McFarling will be performing songs from her new album on Friday, July 19th at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco. Doors open at 8:00pm.

And you know that Mike Greensill, the program’s resident piano player, is at the keyboard.  The Mike Greensill Trio will be performing, along with Wesla Whitfield, on Saturday, July 20th at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland. The music begins at 8:00pm.

Today's Local Music: Joyful Noise Jazz Band

Bay Area journalist and broadcast personality Ben Fong-Torres (on right, with SF Mayor Ed Lee), is one of the participants in this year’s Radio Day by the Bay in Berkeley

The band you’re hearing now is the Joyful Noise Jazz Band from Pinole. They’re playing on Saturday, July 20th,  at the annual Radio Day by the Bay. This event brings together the California Historical Radio Society, the Bay Area Radio Museum, and the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. It all takes place at the historic KRE Radio Building, just off the Ashby Avenue exist of I-80 in Berkeley.

Today's Local Music: Down & Outlaws

If you like your rock ‘n’ roll straight, you may want to show up at San Francisco's Café du Nord Friday night. July 19th,  when local band, Down & Outlaws performs. 

The Down & Outlaws describe their sound as “unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll made with absolutely no traces of ‘indie’ or ‘lo-fi’.” They'll be the first band of the evening, starting about 9:30pm.
