Steven Short


Steven has been with KALW News since it’s beginnings in 2004. His history, art and public interest stories have won awards for Breaking News, Feature Writing and Explanatory Journalism. Some of his reports have aired nationally on NPR.

He is responsible for The Source, a recurring feature on the origins of Bay Area place names. He also researches most of the listings for the Crosscurrents local music calendar and compiles the weekly online Cannabis News Round-up.

The Family Crest is heading the bill on Saturday, May 25th at The Starry Plough on Shattuck in Berkeley. Doors open at 8pm, with music starting at 9pm.

Today's Local Music: Earl Thomas

There aren’t many music festivals named for living performers, but Earl Thomas is one of them. His namesake festival occurs in his birthplace of Pikesville, Tennessee. But you can hear Earl Thomas singing next Monday May 27 at Biscuits and Blues, just off of San Francisco’s Union Square, starting about 7:30pm. Go for the blues, but notice his shoes!

Meredith Axelrod

Most people are eager to discover any new form of technology. And once they do, they quickly forget the “old ways.” Well, singer Meredith Axelrod is not most people. She specializes in recreating early vocal and recording techniques, usually prior to the 1930s. Meredith Axelrod will be singing in her sentimental style next Saturday, May 25 at the Atlas Café in San Francisco, from about 4 to 6pm.
