Steven has been with KALW News since it’s beginnings in 2004. His history, art and public interest stories have won awards for Breaking News, Feature Writing and Explanatory Journalism. Some of his reports have aired nationally on NPR.

He is responsible for The Source, a recurring feature on the origins of Bay Area place names. He also researches most of the listings for the Crosscurrents local music calendar and compiles the weekly online Cannabis News Round-up.

Today's Local Music: Hot Einstein

Today we're featuring the Bay Area band Hot Einstein. They claim to be old and new, at the same time. That’s partly because some band members have known each other a long time, while others are new. You can ask who’s who if you show up at Disco Volante in Oakland on Saturday, March 23. Hot Einstein plays there the third Saturday of each month. Music starts at 9pm.

The Hall Chamber Jazz Ensemble

What you’re hearing now are the sounds of Destiny Muhammad, also known as the Harpist from the Hood. She's part of a "super group" taking part in this year’s International Women's Day Celebration at The Jazz School, on Addison Street in Berkeley. The group calls themselves The Hall Chamber Jazz Ensemble, and they'll be performing on Friday, March 8th at 8:00pm at The Jazz School in Berkeley

Cannabis News Roundup: March 1, 2013

(Field Research Corp.) // A majority of California voters favor legalizing marijuana for recreational use, according to a Field Poll (PDF) released this week. The Bay Area led the state in potential approval, with 66 percent of participants saying yes. That compares with 54 percent in favor throughout the state.  Approval of medical cannabis statewide stays at 72 percent.

Things are going well for Ty Segall, who you’re hearing now. Last year he appeared on both the David Letterman and Conan O’Brien shows, and he was the headliner at The Fillmore about a month ago. This Thursday, though, he’s part of the "Noise Pop" line-up at the humble Knockout Room in San Francisco. Music starts about 10pm.
