Steven has been with KALW News since it’s beginnings in 2004. His history, art and public interest stories have won awards for Breaking News, Feature Writing and Explanatory Journalism. Some of his reports have aired nationally on NPR.

He is responsible for The Source, a recurring feature on the origins of Bay Area place names. He also researches most of the listings for the Crosscurrents local music calendar and compiles the weekly online Cannabis News Round-up.

Today's Local Music: Black Mahal

Today's local music is Black Mahal, featuring the Godfather of Punjabi-American music, Ustad Lai Singh Bhatti. Black Mahal isn’t a band, it’s an experience! They say they represent the new California feel – hippy hybrid hip-hop. You can experience this musical-theatrical mash-up on Thursday, May 30th, as part of this year’s Yerba Buena Gardens Festival of free music. They’ll perform from 12:30 to 1:30 in the afternoon.

Today's Local Music: The Family Crest

The Family Crest

Today we are featuring the full-throated sound of Bay Area band, The Family Crest. They use traditional chamber music instruments and vocalization to produce powerful pop music. 

The Family Crest is heading the bill on Saturday, May 25th at The Starry Plough on Shattuck in Berkeley. Doors open at 8pm, with music starting at 9pm.

Today's Local Music: Earl Thomas

There aren’t many music festivals named for living performers, but Earl Thomas is one of them. His namesake festival occurs in his birthplace of Pikesville, Tennessee. But you can hear Earl Thomas singing next Monday May 27 at Biscuits and Blues, just off of San Francisco’s Union Square, starting about 7:30pm. Go for the blues, but notice his shoes!
