Steven has been with KALW News since it’s beginnings in 2004. His history, art and public interest stories have won awards for Breaking News, Feature Writing and Explanatory Journalism. Some of his reports have aired nationally on NPR.

He is responsible for The Source, a recurring feature on the origins of Bay Area place names. He also researches most of the listings for the Crosscurrents local music calendar and compiles the weekly online Cannabis News Round-up.

Today’s events focused on scientific research, featuring a talk by physicist John Schwarz, often called “the father of Superstring Theory.”

Today's Local Music: Nils Bultmann

Today we are featuring a duet between a classical viola and an Australian didjeridu. Nils Bultmann, who is playing viola, wrote this piece, which may be part of his presentation on Sunday, February 24 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in San Francisco. It’s presented by the Noe Valley Chamber Music series. The concert begins at 4pm.

(ASA) // The US House of Representatives was  presented with updated legislation yesterday calling for cannabis to be reclassified for medical use. US Representative Sam Farr, from California’s Central Coast, is a lead sponsor. The bill is substantially the same as one previously introduced by recently retired US Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts.

If you think love letters are quaint and lack passion, Janet Gallin of the Love Letter Squad has news for you.

“It’s felt the touch of your hand,” she says of these testaments to our feelings. “You have probably, when you finished it, held it to your lips. You might have just caressed it.”

You may have held it to your heart. And Gallin concludes, “You have licked the rim of that envelope, closed it with your own sweet tongue – you are all over this thing!” And that’s just the outside.
