Steven has been with KALW News since it’s beginnings in 2004. His history, art and public interest stories have won awards for Breaking News, Feature Writing and Explanatory Journalism. Some of his reports have aired nationally on NPR.

He is responsible for The Source, a recurring feature on the origins of Bay Area place names. He also researches most of the listings for the Crosscurrents local music calendar and compiles the weekly online Cannabis News Round-up.

Size matters in "Powers of Ten" tribute

Charles and Ray Eames are best known as mid-20th Century designers of architecture and furniture, but they also worked in graphic design, fine art, and film. Unquestionably their most famous film was “Powers of Ten” (1968), which they describe as “a film dealing with the relative size of things in the universe, and the effect of adding another zero.”

Now here’s something you don’t hear every day – a Guitar Pull. The term seems to come from the Great Depression when a group would get together to play songs. Often only one player would have a guitar, so they’d “pull” it from each other to have a turn.

Today’s Local Music: The Rogers

If your band members were named Walter, Brent, Roland, and Rafael, what would you call the band?  Why, The Rogers, of course! Although they’ve only been playing together in public for about a year, The Rogers already have an album, which was released this past summer.  You can hear them live on December 17, when they play The Rocket Room, an intimate space inside of the famous Fillmore, in San Francisco.

Harborside Health Center wins a battle in the marijuana war

Last month, Governor Jerry Brown,  speaking on CNN, said:  “It’s time for the Justice Department to recognize the sovereignty of the states. We already have a fair amount of marijuana use in the guise of medical marijuana, so we are capable of self-government. We don’t need some federal gendarme to come tell us what to do.”

Cannabis news roundup

(SFWeekly) // A judge ruled Friday that Harborside Health Center cannot be evicted under state law, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office would still like to seize the property under federal law. That decision could come before the end of the month, although it has been postponed before.
