Steven has been with KALW News since it’s beginnings in 2004. His history, art and public interest stories have won awards for Breaking News, Feature Writing and Explanatory Journalism. Some of his reports have aired nationally on NPR.

He is responsible for The Source, a recurring feature on the origins of Bay Area place names. He also researches most of the listings for the Crosscurrents local music calendar and compiles the weekly online Cannabis News Round-up.

Recently on Crosscurrents, we aired a profile of Oakland’s Mormon Temple – an aesthetic icon in the city – and a place that’s very special to a man who was married there.

“Also, it is a place where a temple marriage can be performed, a marriage performed in a Mormon temple is not said to be ‘til’ death do you part, but also to carry on into the eternities,” Jay Pimentel said in the piece.

Maybe you’ve noticed a theme in our music this week... it’s all from Baltimore. When the 49ers lost to the Ravens last Sunday, we lost a bet with Baltimore station WTMD. So you’ll be hearing the sweet strains of the Chesapeake Bay all week on Crosscurrents. Today we’re featuring David Byrne, raised in Baltimore. The movie Stop Making Sense, about Byrne’s band The Talking Heads, is playing at the Parkway Theatre at midnight on Friday. So, there from Chesapeake Bay to our own Bay... go Ravens!

(SFGate) // Close Harborside Health Center in Oakland and “tens of thousands of patients” will be forced to buy cannabis on street corners. That’s the City of Oakland’s argument, as presented yesterday in the on-going forfeiture case against the mega-dispensary and the US Attorney. The US Attorney, in turn, says Oakland doesn’t have any legal rights in this case. No comment from the judge on her eventual decision.
