We've all heard of the ride of Paul Revere in 1775.  Well, two years later, in 1777, Sybil Ludington, aged 16, rode 40 miles to alert American colonial forces to the approach of the British regular forces

1925 – Franz Kafka publishes his landmark novel The Trial.  The text, which was initially published as Der Process, is a nightmarish account of a man being arrested and prosecuted by a faceless authority for an unknown crime.

1937 – Spanish Civil War: Guernica, Spain, is bombed by German Luftwaffe.
