Arts/Culture/Weekend: Folk, Family, and Free Donuts

Free music, free exhibits, even free doughnuts!  Freely enjoy your Arts/Culture/Weekend:

Thursday

BAM/PFA // It's the first Thursday of the month, which means you can visit the public galleries of the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive at no charge. DETAILS: 11am - 5pm, 2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley. COST: Free.

Yerba Buena Fest // The Family Crest is one of my favorite local bands. They have a free lunchtime show today. It's part of the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. I'm offering a money-back guarantee if you don't like this performance. DETAILS: 12:30 - 1:30pm, Yerba Buena Gardens, 4th & Mission, San Francisco. COST: Free.

Friday

National Donut Day // Stop by a Krispy Kreme location in the East Bay and get a free doughnut. They'll probably even give you one if you spell it "donut." Doh!  DETAILS: Check for participating Krispy Kreme stores. COST: Free.

Saturday

Book Event // Quick: how many "islands" are in San Francisco Bay?  Photographer James Martin says there are 48. He'll explain in a presentation based on his book. DETAILS:  2pm, SF Public Library, Visitation Valley branch, 201 Leland Ave. San Francisco. COST: Free.

Free Folk Fest // The 37th Annual Free Folk Festival takes place this weekend in San Francisco. There are scores of workshops and performances on Saturday and Sunday. KALW will have a table near the entrance. "Folk Music & Beyond" host Joann Mar will be working the table early Saturday afternoon, and I take over mid-afternoon. Stop and pick up a bumper sticker or program guide on your way to one of the events. DETAILS: Saturday & Sunday, noon - 10pm, Presidio Middle School, 450 30th Ave., San Francisco. COST: Free - but donations are welcome.

Sunday

Open Studios // East Bay Open Studios takes place this weekend. The Oakland Tribune says it's "One of the best forums around for Bay Area artists and art lovers to meet." DETAILS: Various locations. See website for a directory. COST: Free.

Arts/Culture/Weekend is a roundup of our favorite events coming up around the Bay Area. Please do let us know if you have an event coming up in your neighborhood, and we'll try to include it.
