California Speaks: What should we do to improve the news media?

Last Wednesday, media outlets across the country came together in solidarity, speaking about the importance of a free press. The next day, the U.S. Senate unanimously declared “the press is not the enemy of the people” in a roll call vote. This is in response, of course, to President Trump’s statement that the media is the enemy of the American people.

Well, we don’t agree, but we do like to think about ways journalists can do their jobs better. So our multi-station project California Speaksasked, “What should we do to improve the news media?” Let’s hear what you had to say.

"Start with an apprenticeship program in the news business rather than the professional education system because only about 25% of people actually graduate from college," says Mark from Redding.

I joined KALW in 2004. As Executive News Editor and then News Director, I helped our news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. I've also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and have taught hundreds of audio producers. I served as interim Executive Director for nearly two years. My work is currently focused on creating original live events, programming, and building partnerships with like-minded organizations.
