LEGALIZATION & LEGISLATION

Marijuana is still illegal for federal employees // Washingtonpost.com   “The 1986 executive order from President Ronald Reagan requiring the federal workplace and workforce to be drug-free remains in place, applying to medicinal as well as recreational use of marijuana.” Forewarned is forearmed.

How did your Senator vote on medical cannabis for vets? // Marijuana.com  “The Senate Appropriations Committee passed an amendment [last week] that would prevent the Department of Veterans Affairs from spending money to enforce a current policy that prohibits V.A. doctors from filling out medical marijuana recommendation forms in states where the drug is legal.”  It could be considered by the U.S. Senate next month.

COPS & COURTS

NORML appeals Schedule 1 ruling // Theleafonline.com  “When Judge Kimberly Mueller of the federal Eastern District of California ruled against the defense motion to declare the Schedule I status of cannabis unconstitutional, she made at least one glaring error” – an error NORML plans to pursue. 

Rural Marin may get a dispensary // Ptreyeslight.com  Public comment is set for next month.

Father & son plead no contest to triple murder // PressDemocrat.com  The pair “is accused of gunning down three unarmed men while they groomed and packaged a large volume of marijuana in Forestville, authorities said.”

Grower gets prison term for Sierra fire // SFgate.com  “EdgardoFournier received the severe punishment after admitting that he intentionally set a fire around his marijuana plants in July to fend off other pot growers who were chasing him.”

Edibles present new concern in non-legal states // NYtimes.com  They’re obviously easier to conceal, and residents are less likely to understand the dramatically varying effects compared to smoked cannabis.

BUSINESS

The Hemp Center closes in “hostile takeover” // SFWeekly.com  “The Hemp Center was the first dispensary to carry the now-legendary strain Girl Scout Cookies.” It shut down this week, under  a murky legal situation.

Vallejo approves new dispensaries // TimesHeraldonline.com   “City staff has argued that all dispensaries in the city are operating illegally, since Vallejo’s zoning law does not recognize MMDs as an appropriate land use.”

Most dispensary theft is in-house // MJbizdaily.com   Security experts estimate that “roughly 90% of financial and product loss in the marijuana industry can be chalked up to employee theft.”

What will Oregon do with all that marijuana? // Oregonlive.com   It’s estimated that “Oregon medical marijuana growers produce more than 400,000 pounds a year.”  That’s seven grams per day for the state’s registered medical patients. The heaviest users typically consume a little over one gram a day.

Willie Nelson writes another autobiography // SFGate.com    The 82-year-old singer/songwriter and marijuana advocate, who previously wrote “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” has had a flourishing music career since trading alcohol for THC.

EVENTS

Lt. Gov. talks pot policy today in Garberville // Northcoastjournal.com   A marijuana policy discussion featuring Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom is planned today (05.29) in Garberville, located in California’s Emerald Triangle. The event starts at 1 pm, and the pubic is invited.

Marijuana documentary at Green Film Fest // GreenFilmFest.org  “Marijuana Grows and Restoration,” a short film produced by the U.S. Forest Service, will screen tomorrow (05.30) at the fifth annual San Francisco Green Film Festival. The production looks at the damage to public lands caused by illegal marijuana operations, and efforts to repair the damage. The festival takes place May 28 – June 3 at the Roxie Theater on 16th Street in San Francisco.

Hemp History Week plans national events // TheHIA.org   “Encouraged by federal support in Congress, with the Industrial Hemp Farming Act introduced in both the House and Senate in January 2015, the campaign’s theme Sow the Seed will highlight spring plantings in states that have passed legislation legalizing industrial hemp farming.”  The week of events for the close cousin of cannabis starts Monday (06.01).

IN OTHER NEWS….

Front-row pot smoke sabotages vocalist for The Who // NYT.com   Roger Daltrey “complained, early in the two-hour set [in New York], that pot smoke from somewhere in the front rows was threatening to shut down his voice.” Band mate Pete Townshend encouraged the audience to “eat it” instead.
