Amminano bill reconsidered today… First national brand of dispensaries proposed… Doctors recommend cannabis... Whole Foods celebrates Hemp Week... and more!

LEGISLATION

News & Review // A federal judge says the Justice Dept. is focusing on California’s dispensaries while seeming to ignore the situations in Washington and Colorado because the laws in those states are better written....

Assemblyman Ammiano // … Tom Ammiano, State Assemblyman from San Francisco, is trying to correct that with AB 473, his revised medical marijuana regulation. It was approved in committee last Friday but was rejected yesterday by the full Assembly, 32-36. Ammiano is using a procedural move to reconsider the bill today, according to the East Bay Express.

Westword // Regulating “recreational marijuana is really a completely new entity," says Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, who signed six cannabis bills on Tuesday. Recreational cannabis could be for sale by New Year’s Day.

Oregon Live // Oregon lawmakers are still considering cannabis regulations, but sale of the product is currently against state and federal law. This fact was made clear in southern Oregon [the area closest to California]  this week where cannabis clubs were raided.

Yahoo! News // A former Microsoft executive wants to create the first national chain of dispensaries, catering to “discerning smokers.” Former Mexican President Vicente Fox appeared at the news conference to show support for the idea, adding that he has no financial interest.

The plan will face major hurdles, according to the online Medical Marijuana Business Journal.

HEALTH

NORML // Multiple Sclerosis patients saw a “significant improvement” when hemp seed nutritional oil, which is legal, was part of a prescribed diet, according to data in the current issue of Bioimpacts, a scientific journal.

SFGate // Three out of four doctors recommend cannabis “in certain circumstances,” according to a poll by The New England Journal of Medicine.

NPR // Cannabis edibles look enticing, which is why this doctor says they should be properly labeled, and kept away from children….

NJ.com // …unless the children have prescriptions. A New Jersey lawmaker introduced a bill yesterday that would ease restrictions on prescribing medical cannabis to youngsters.

IN OTHER NEWS….

Denver Post // Is rat poison from illegal cannabis plantations killing the spotted owl? A UC-Davis doctoral student hopes to answer that question.

Hemp History Week // June 3 – 9, is the fourth annual Hemp History Week. A variety of events are planned throughout the country, including a marketing tie-in with Whole Foods, which will be “spotlighting more than 300 hemp products.”

The only event I found in the Bay Area is “Bringing It Home,” a hemp documentary that’s scheduled to be shown June 6 at 7 pm at the old cellSPACE location, 2050 Bryant Street in San Francisco. Check the Hemp History Week website for more details, or just show up.
