California immigrants claim 605,000 driver’s licenses in first year // Sacramento Bee

"Immigrants in the country illegally received 605,000 California drivers licenses in the first year of a program making the cards available."

"The program has proved hugely popular so far, exceeding the Department of Motor Vehicle’s projections and demolishing fears that an immigrant population fearful of public exposure would not take advantage of the new licenses. The DMV said at the outset it expected to distribute 1.4 million of the licenses over the program’s first three years."

Raiders won't reveal their case for leaving Oakland // Inside Bay Area

"Should the Raiders have to tell the world why they want to leave Oakland?"

"The NFL's six-page relocation policy seems to say yes -- in fact, it requires them to publish their reasons in local newspapers. Confronted with the policy, the St. Louis Rams released their relocation application Tuesday, and it contains plenty of discouraging words about St. Louis as a football market."

"But so far, the Raiders have refused to follow suit, and the league is backing them up, saying its policy doesn't say what it seems to say."

"The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District sent a letter to Tri-Valley Learning Corporation CEO John Zukoski in early October, informing him that the district was aware that students from Asia were paying tuition to attend Livermore Valley Charter Preparatory."

"Anonymous sources told the site that the cuts could reduce the company's workforce by more than a thousand employees and may begin this month. Business Insider reported that the layoffs may target the company's European operations as well as its media business and platforms-technology group; they could total more than 1,000 positions."

S.F. chief bars firefighters from buying Super Bowl badges // San Francisco Chronicle

"San Francisco is playing Super Bowl host city, but Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White has nixed the idea of individual firefighters buying the NFL-sanctioned commemorative badges that celebrate the event — in part out of concern that the game leads to domestic violence."

"Hayes-White said the badges, which are being sold for $124.99 apiece to public safety officers throughout the Bay Area, would trivialize the department’s 'rich 150-year history.'"
