SF cable car operators call for safety reforms in wake of devastating injuries // SF Examiner

“Perhaps the worst day of Santiago Montoya’s life was April 6 of this year. That’s when he was hit by a car while on the job as a cable car operator. The collision destroyed his body, and he is still recovering in a Concord hospital."

"Two months later, another cable car operator, Reynaldo Morante, was struck by a suspected drunken motorcyclist. Morante’s injuries were severe and he slipped into a coma. This week, he is expected to be taken off life support.

"Spurred by Morante’s impending death and Montoya’s injuries, cable car operators are asking the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency for new safety measures for those who operate The City’s moving monuments. In response to several San Francisco Examiner inquiries and Morante’s collision, the SFMTA said it is evaluating all signage within cable cars and along routes to assess any needed changes to increase safety."

Parents of woman killed on SF pier want strict immigration law // NBC NEWS

“The parents of Kathryn Steinle said Monday that they support a proposal to give mandatory prison time to deported people who return to the U.S. illegally.

"Steinle, 32, was walking along a waterfront in San Francisco when she was shot by a gun allegedly fired by Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, a Mexican national who was in the country illegally. Sanchez, 45, who has pleaded not guilty, had been released from jail months before the shooting, despite a federal immigration order asking local authorities to hold him.

"The death of their daughter has fueled a national debate on immigration, with advocates of stricter border control and even some Bay Area Democrats denouncing San Francisco as a city whose immigrant "sanctuary" protections harbor people who are in the country illegally.”

"Officers responded to an alert from gunfire detection in the area of the Sunnydale housing projects and found Davis on the ground outside with blood covering his torso around 3:27 a.m., Officer Grace Gatpandan said. Davis had been shot by an unknown man with a handgun."

"A homicide investigation is underway and no further information on the slaying has been released."

Sinbad’s struggle to stay costing SF money // SF Examiner

"Sinbad’s Pier 2 restaurant is starting to get expensive for The City – and that’s without dinner or drinks."

"The longtime waterfront restaurant had agreed to vacate its location on Pier 2 on The Embarcadero in March, so that the pier can be demolished and a new ferry terminal can be built in its place. The restaurant’s owners had a change of heart and filed a lawsuit seeking to stay until next year.

"Meanwhile, the Port of San Francisco – the restaurant’s landlord – is racking up fines every day that the seafood restaurant keeps serving cocktails, oysters, and old-school dishes like lobster thermidor.

"That matter is scheduled to go to trial in San Francisco Superior Court this week."

Two S.F. Drag Queens Sell Bernal Heights Home with Hilarious Video // SF Weekly

“It may not be Welcome to My Home, the funniest thing in the history of the internet, but local drag queens Mercedes Munro and Katya Smirnoff-Skyy have put together a hilarious, seven-minute video welcoming you into a home that is decidedly not their own.”

“It’s certainly an innovative way to show a house, 52 Mirabel Avenue in Bernal Heights, to potential buyers. Realtors Danielle Lazier and Michael Minson thought it would be a fine way to attract attention to the rather fabulous digs — even if Smirnoff-Skyy’s wig looks like Bonnie Raitt sat for hours under a dryer at a salon in Stepford, Conn.

"The glamorous duo preen and fawn over the Downtown view from which “you can feel like Eva Peron!” and the kitchen whose countertops contain “naturally occurring garnets” that make Smirnoff-Skyy exclaim about making coq au vin on the five-burner range in spite her inability to cook. Meanwhile, Munro waxes poetic about the master bath while laying in the tub.”
