City Workers Begin Clearing Division Street Homeless Despite 72-Hour Notice // CBS SF Bay Area

“Residents of a large homeless encampment along Division Street in San Francisco were given 72-hours notice to relocate Tuesday, but many people said they were being forced to move immediately.

“San Francisco has been trying to encourage the homeless to use the new shelter on Pier 80, but many campers have refused to budge.

“This stretch of Division Street has been cluttered with dozens of tents for weeks.”

Protesting Racist Incidents, Lowell High School Students Walk Out // Hoodline

“29 students at the city's public Lowell High School walked out of class today, in protest of racist incidents that have been occurring at their school. The most notable of those incidents occurred earlier this month, when a student posted photos depicting various rappers and President Obama in a window, with the message ‘Happy Black History Month #gang.’

“Though the display was removed and the student responsible was disciplined, the students, some of whom were joined by their parents, are protesting what they say is ‘an uncomfortable climate for black students.’ They say they want the school to be more culturally sensitive, and to create a more inclusive environment.”

Bay Area Rallies Against FBI Threats to Privacy and Security // Electronic Frontier Foundation

"Dozens of people gathered at the Apple Store in San Francisco this evening to shout their support for the company's position defending privacy and security in the face of irresponsible government demands.

"Organized as part of a day of action including events in Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C, and Southern California, the rally in San Francisco was the second in a single week responding to the FBI's latest demands to expand its authority."

S.F. board unanimously backs condom access in middle school // SF Gate

“Concerned parents squared off against health and education officials Tuesday night as the San Francisco school board voted unanimously to allow access to condoms in city middle schools.

“The new policy will allow staff to individually give students condoms ‘in conjunction with a session with a school nurse or social worker to identify risk factors and provide referrals or resources as necessary.’”

San Francisco EPA Workers Claim Office Is a 'Sick Building' // NBC Bay Area

“The Environmental Protection Agency's mission is to protect human health and the environment, but nearly 100 of its own employees based in the Bay Area believe they're getting sick just by going to work. Employees say the indoor air quality is so bad at the EPA Region 9 Headquarters in San Francisco, they're unable to do their jobs.

“The irony is not lost on Taly Jolish, a staff attorney for the EPA and vice president of ASGE Local 1236, one of Region 9's three unions. ‘It just seems crazy to us that someone would be risking their health by coming into the office to work on cleaning up the environment elsewhere,’ Jolish said.”

Nap Pods Come to University of California Berkeley // NBC Bay Area

“They're not just for tech companies anymore, nap pods have come to the campus of UC Berkeley.

“The pods are the result of an initiative led by students, who reached out to library and Student Union officials to designate four areas as ‘REST zones.’”
