The East Bay Times' Neil Chase on winning the Pulitzer for Ghost Ship fire coverage

Marissa Ortega-Welch

The Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting was awarded to the staff of the East Bay Times for “relentless coverage of the ‘Ghost Ship’ fire ... and for reporting after the tragedy that exposed the city’s failure to take actions that might have prevented it.”

Neil Chase is executive editor of Bay Area News Group, which oversees the East Bay Times. KALW’s Ben Trefny reached him in his office to talk about what it took to win journalism’s top honor.

CHASE: We don't have enough people to do the breadth of coverage we might have done 17 years ago ... but that's not an excuse to do lower quality coverage.
