This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the performing arts in the Bay Area, host David Latulippe talks with playwright Melissa Ross, about the world premiere production of her play An Entomologist’s Love Story at SF Playhouse.
An Entomologist’s Love Story, directed by Giovanna Sardelli, is set in the Museum of Natural History, where entomologists Betty (Lori Prince) and Jeff (Lucas Verbrugghe) research the mating rituals of bugs, while finding their own complicated relationships increasingly under the microscope. An Entomologist’s Love Story runs through June 23 at SF Playhouse (450 Post Street) in San Francisco.
Also in the studio are playwright Lynne Kaufman and director Robert Kelley, to discuss Kaufman’s play Two Minds, about the relationship between two brilliant Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky (played by Jackson Davis and Brian Herndon).
Kahneman and Tversky won a MacArthur Genius Award and a Nobel Prize for their groundbreaking research on how we think. Two Minds tells the story of their unique collaboration and troubled friendship. Through June 9 at The Marsh in San Francisco (1062 Valencia Street).
ODC Theater director Julie Potter stops by to bring us up to speed about the 2018 Walking Distance Dance Festival, which takes place from May 15 - 20 at and around the ODC Theater (3153 - 17th Street) in San Francisco. The seventh edition of this annual festival features dance productions by and with Yara Travieso, Kiandanda Dance Theater, Rashaun Mitchell, Silas Riener, Phillip Greenlief, Shoko Hikage, Claudia La Rocco and Belinda McGuire.
Julie Potter is accompanied by ODC Theater resident artist Maurya Kerr, who will host ‘the (not so) tiny little get down’ dance party during the festival, on May 19 in Studio B, ODC Dance Commons (351 Shotwell Street, SF).
Plus, Open Air’s regular contributor and critic at large, Peter Robinson, has a conversation with theater scholar Dr. Philippa Kelly, about all things Summer Shakespeare, including the War of the Roses, and the Oregon and California Shakespeare Festivals. Philippa Kelly’s book on Dramaturgy is due later this year.
