Filmmaker Mimi Chakarova highlights stories of resilience

Jul 3, 2018

On this edition of Your Call, we discuss Still I Rise, a new documentary short series that pays homage to Maya Angelou’s poem by the same name by celebrating people who persevere in spite of their struggles.

We’ll speak with Mimi Chakarova and Dionicia Ramos, who shares the experiences of her undocumented parents in the film The Alien. Her dad crossed the border searching for work. After 60 years of harvesting the land of others, he now tends to his own garden. Dionicia’s parents put all four of their kids through college.

Guests:

Mimi Chakarova, filmmaker, photographer, and creator of the films The Price of Sex, In the Red, Men in Love, and the documentary series Still I Rise

Dionicia Ramos Ledesma, narrator in the documentary short The Alien in the series Still I Rise and director of public information for the Hayward Unified School District
