San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is backing a proposal to build a second BART tunnel to connect with the East Bay. According to documents released after his State of the City address, last week, he plans to begin a conversation with other mayors and the BART Board.
The concept would not follow the same path as the current BART tunnel, which runs from north of the Port of Oakland to San Francisco’s Market Street. Rather, a proposed route would extend from Alameda Island to San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood. The idea has not been fully explored yet, and will go through community and environmental impact studies.
KALW's Ben Trefny spoke with Nick Josefowitz, BART Director for District 8, to learn more about the proposal.
