Led by trumpeter/composer Darren Johnston, Broken Shadows brings poetry, interplay, vocal harmonies, and a cross-section of musical interests into a curious new blend of roots/art/dance music.
Since settling in San Francisco in 1997, Canada-born Darren Johnston has collaborated and recorded with an extremely diverse cross-section of artists. His interests rotate around composing instrumental music, writing songs, and performing all styles of jazz, experimental, and purely improvised music, as well as traditional music of the Balkans, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, and the Arab world. These interests have coalesced into his primary ensemble of late, the Americana-influenced Broken Shadows. Darren and friends join host Devon Strolovitch live in the studio this Wednesday 5/10 at 9 pm for a preview of the band's show at the Red Poppy Art House this Friday.
Broken Shadows is one of the Bay Area bands featured on "Live From the Fog City Blues Volume 2." That CD is still available (along with the more recent Volume 3) EXCLUSIVELY as a thank-you gift for donating to your local public radio station during our spring membership campaign.
