Do you know who owns your local newspaper? You might assume its a massive media chain, but these days many papers across the country are actually controlled by hedge funds, with little interest in newspapers beyond the profit they can produce.

These disconnected, almost faceless firms are bleeding local papers for profits. But some journalists are organizing and fighting back, including here in the bay area. They are calling for local buyers to step up, and want the public service mission of newspapers to be fulfilled.
