If you had to hole up somewhere for months, or even years, what would you need?
University Lutheran Chapel in Berkeley prepared a room last summer for an undocumented individual or couple who face final deportation orders. The church has a long history of sheltering people, including in the 1980s when it was part of the nascent sanctuary movement that helped migrants from the war-torn countries of Guatemala and El Salvador. The Spiritual Edge’s Judy Silber spoke with Rev. Jeff Johnson and asked him to describe the space and its purpose.
