Valley Fire visit on Sept. 23, 2015 to Lakeport and Middletown

It’s been 18 days since the Valley Fire ignited, and in some places the burning continues. But this week students returned to school, despite, in many cases, having no home to return to.

Jodi Hernandez, a reporter with NBC Bay Area, has been covering the story since the fire began. Ben Trefny sat down with her to talk about the latest developments.

It's been really difficult. Nearly 1,300 homes were lost and dozens of apartments and businesses. There aren’t that many hotel rooms up there to house all those that are displaced.

I joined KALW in 2004. As Executive News Editor and then News Director, I helped our news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. I've also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and have taught hundreds of audio producers. I served as interim Executive Director for nearly two years. My work is currently focused on creating original live events, programming, and building partnerships with like-minded organizations.
