1809 – Mary Kies becomes the first woman awarded a U.S. patent, for a technique of weaving straw with silk and thread.

1821 – Emperor Napoleon dies in exile on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean.

1862 – Cinco de Mayo: The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's victory against all odds over invading French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza
