"King Lear," as told by the fool

David Ford

At the Marsh Theater, you’ll find a man named Geoff Doyle trying a new approach to William Shakespeare's King Lear. The original play is the story of a king who decides to divide his kingdom amongst his three daughters by testing their loyalty -- and ends up making some bad decisions in the process.

In Doyle's new play, Lear’s Shadow, we hear the Jester’s side of the story -- a supporting character in King Lear. David Latulippe sat down with Doyle on KALW's Open Air to learn about why he decided to play the fool.

GEOFF DOYLE: We took great liberties, we deconstructed it, they were a lot of purists who will probably very unhappy with what we did, which is great.
