The Making Of... The Homobile

This is the story about a small business that helps San Francisco’s LGBTQ community and its friends get around the city in style. It’s called Homobiles, and it's a non-commercial, volunteer, 24/7 car service.

Lynnee Breedlove created Homobiles in 2010 when she noticed that her friends, especially those in the drag community, were in desperate need of safe, dependable rides. The service relies on donations and a network of independent drivers who don’t mind if there’s a little, or a lot, of glitter left behind.

In this story from Bay Area production team The Kitchen Sisters, Breedlove takes us on a night drive with the ride service whose mission is more social than financial.

LYNNEE BREEDLOVE: If you're putting on all this padding, high heels, a wig, three sets of false eyelashes, and a bunch of glitter, you are high priority at Homobiles.

This story was produced by The Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, as part of their Making Of... radio series.

The Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson & Nikki Silva) are producers of the duPont-Columbia Award-winning, NPR series, Hidden Kitchens, and two Peabody Award-winning NPR series, Lost & Found Sound and The Sonic Memorial Project. Hidden Kitchens, heard on Morning Edition, explores the world of secret, unexpected, below-the-radar cooking across America—how communities come together through food. The series inspired Hidden Kitchens: Stories, Recipes, and More from NPR's The Kitchen Sisters, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year that was also nominated for a James Beard Award for Best Writing on Food. The Hidden Kitchens audio book, narrated by Academy Award winner, Frances McDormand, received a 2006 Audie Award.
