City Visions: Can "slow medicine" save money?

On this show, City Visions turns to San Francisco's "sick poor" and to Laguna Honda hospital, one of the last almshouses in the country.  Host Joseph Pace sits down with former Laguna Honda doctor Victoria Sweet to discuss her book God's Hotel.  Her book struck a chord with doctors, nurses, and patients hungry for a more personal approach to the business of health care.

Consequently, the enthusiasm for Sweet's "slow medicine" approach continues to grow.

Listen to Dr. Sweet make the case for the efficiency of "slow medicine" and the merits of institutionalized care.  What can we learn from the pre-modern medicine Dr. Sweet has studied?  With its up-to-date technology, is the new Laguna Honda serving its patients better?

Producer:  Wendy Holcombe

Guest:

Dr. Victoria Sweet, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and a prize-winning historian with a Ph.D. in history.   Dr. Sweet was a physician at Laguna Honda Hospital for 20 years.  She is a Guggenheim Fellow, working on her forthcoming book, Slow Medicine:  Healing in the Age of Technology.
