The Nocturnists: Where health-care workers tell their tales

Jen Olenik
The Nocturnists live storytelling series

Dr. Emily Silverman noticed that she and her colleagues were missing a creative outlet for processing their professional experiences. So, she created the live storytelling event, The Nocturnist.

Emily Silverman had always wanted to become a doctor. But in the midst of her residency, she realized she’d lost something.

She’s always been a creative person, yet she and her fellow residents didn’t have an outlet to process the experiences they had working in the hospital.

Emily saw that many of her experiences made for great stories, stories that people are interested in, and that doctors really needed to tell.

That’s why she created The Nocturnists, a live storytelling event for healthcare practitioners, where they can laugh and cry with an empathetic audience.

"We often talk about humanizing the patient, but less so about humanizing the physician and that's something I felt I was going through as a resident was this slow process of dehumanization."

We'll get a taste of what these Nocturnist readings with some excerpts from a program recorded last year at the Embassy in San Francisco. You can also find more recordings online.
