- Full Wolf Moon Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January’s full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

- 1743 --- The first recorded town meeting in America was held, at Faneuil Hall in Boston.

- 1864 --- Samuel Baker discovered another source of the Nile in East Africa. He named it Lake Albert Nyanza.
- 1914 --- Henry Ford announced the new continuous motion method to assemble cars. The process decreased the time to make a car from 12½ hours to 93 minutes.
- 1950 --- The Federal Bureau of Investigation institutes the “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list in an effort to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives. The creation of the program arose out of a wire service news story in 1949 about the “toughest guys” the FBI wanted to capture.
- 1956 --- The movie "Rock Around the Clock" (with Bill Haley) made its premiere in Washington, DC.
- 1964 --- A jury in Dallas found Jack Ruby guilty of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy.
- 1980 --- Quincy Jones got a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
- 1990 --- The Congress of People’s Deputies elects General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev as the new president of the Soviet Union. While the election was a victory for Gorbachev, it also revealed serious weaknesses in his power base that would eventually lead to the collapse of his presidency in December 1991.
- 1991 --- The "Birmingham Six," imprisoned for 16 years for their alleged part in an IRA pub bombing, were set free after a court agreed that the police fabricated evidence.
- 2005 --- A judge in San Francisco ruled that California's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional.
