If things go the way Bay Area sports fans hope, by the time voters head to the ballot box on June 5, the Warriors may be in the middle of the NBA finals at Oracle Arena in Oakland.
But if the Warriors make the finals next June, they’ll be playing in San Francisco, in their brand-new stadium in Mission Bay.
Proposition I wants to discourage moves like this one. If it passes, San Francisco would have a quote “official policy” discouraging owners of professional sports teams from relocating to the city.
It was written by Warriors fans who are upset about the move for a couple of reasons — such as the financial and cultural loss to Oakland. They also don’t like that traffic and and congestion might get worse in Mission Bay.
Basically, with this measure, they are saying San Francisco shouldn’t do what it did with the Warriors ever again.
The measure also gets a bit more specific. It says the city would denounce teams who move to try to avoid paying debts somewhere else.
SUPPORTERS
The ballot measure is sponsored and funded by a volunteer organization called Good Neighbor Coalition — specifically formed to write this measure.
They say poaching the Warriors from Oakland is not in keeping with the values of San Francisco. And they say this proposition would show the city’s support of Oakland’s community and Warriors fans.
OPPONENTS
There is no official opposition to the ballot measure, but the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee has endorsed a no vote on Proposition I

So, if you don’t want San Francisco to lure established sports teams to the city, vote Yes on Prop I.
If you don’t care care, vote no.
