Reflecting on safety in schools

Wikimedia Commons

We train inmates at San Quentin to report stories from inside the prison. Our conversations often turn to current events, and a few weeks this included the recent Parkland school shooting and the ongoing debate around gun control.

The men had many thoughts to share on the topic; KALW's Greg Eskridge recorded their ideas about what would help keep kids safe in schools.

"So me and my wife were having this conversation today about the high schools in Modesto, and how the majority of them don't have a gate around them; anybody can just walk onto the campus. Of course we don't want to turn our schools into prison. However, I'm concerned about my son’s well being, which I'm sure a lot of parents ... I'm sure they're concerned about their children as well."

San Quentin Radio is a project in which KALW editors train inmates to report stories from inside prison. San Quentin officials listened to and approved the audio for this story prior to broadcast. Thanks to Sam Robinson and Larry Schneider for their help.
