Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Khafre Jay, Founder of Hip Hop for Change, told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening around the Bay this weekend:

Chiapas Support Committee presents CompArte 2 SolidarizArte: Dreaming Art & Revolution with the Zapatistas on Sunday, 7/31, at Omni Oakland Commons. This event features music, painting and spoken word artists Arnoldo Garcia, Stephanie Wong, Etecia Brown among others. It’s a parallel event to “CompArte” in Chiapas, Mexico, which celebrates the revolutionary art and culture of the Zapatista movement.

JAY: If you wanna see some radical stuff, you should go and support the homies.

Return of the Cipher (R.O.T.C.), a hip-hop freestyle session, happens this and every Sunday at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco’s Fillmore district. Gem Stone Band provides the music and all MC’s and vocalists are invited to rock the mic. The night also has a dance party component presided over by DJ Kevvy Kev.

JAY: If you’ve never been to a hip-hop event, you need to step your game up first, and come see the importance of our community.

Honey Hive Gallery plays host to Re:Search this Friday, 7/29, in San Francisco. This hip hop show is headlined by Illogic and includes performances by Gilead 7 & Phantom Thrett, Heddy Fur, J-Scribe and others.

JAY: Illogic is a dope artist with a great flow and Honey Hive Gallery is an amazing art space.
