Sights & Sounds: Marco Peris Coppola

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Marco Peris Coppola, percussionist and creative strategist for Balkan brass band Inspector Gadje told KALW’s Jen Chien about three great events happening around the Bay this weekend.

The New Situationists exhibition is the first major survey of Bay Area avant-garde art and counter-cultural activities, influenced by the ideas, theory and techniques of the Situationist International movement in the late 50s through early 70s. The Situationists aimed for integration of art and life and critiqued consumer capitalism. This exhibit will feature work from many different artists, and hopes to incite a new generation of artists, who will look into the past in attempt to dismantle, fight, and subvert the present. The exhibition will be up at Pro Arts in Oakland March 3rd through April 28th. 

COPPOLA: I'm very curious because I feel like in these times right now, artists today have the responsibility to be the antibodies for the political situation that's covering the United States. 

After beginning her career with gospel music, Faye Carol was a part of Oakland's innovative funk scene in the 1960s and later went on to form her own trio. She has shared the stage with artists such as Albert King, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Billy Higgins, Charles Brown, Bobby Hutchinson and Pharaoh Sanders. She has been performing at The Backroom in Berkeley as part of a residency for the past few months. She will be accompanied by Joe Warner on piano this Sunday. 

COPPOLA: While I watched her perform I started getting goose bumps around my wrist area, and they went up my head, into my spine, and down to my feet. And I was just in a state of shock. 

The Flamenco Room is a night of flamenco dancing and a flamenco-themed menu, featuring performances by Daniel Azcarate, Roberto Aguilar, Kerensa DeMars and Melissa Cruz.  The Flamenco Room will take place at Thirsty Bear Brewing Company in San Francisco, on Sunday evening.
