Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Dance instructor, choreographer and producer Micaya told KALW’s Jen Chien about three great arts events happening around the Bay this weekend.
- Ia 'Oe E Ka La Hula Festival & Competition at the Alameda County Fairgrounds all weekend long.
- Immigrant Stories presented by Playback Theatre at La Peña Cultural Center on 11/5.
- "Return of the Cypher" at the Boom Boom Roomon 11/6.
The Ia 'Oe E Ka La Hula Festival & Competition is the oldest hula festival held outside the state of Hawaii - it’s been an annual tradition since 1984. The festival and competition celebrates Hawaiian culture and traditions through solo and group hula competitions, arts and crafts, and food.
MICAYA: It looks fun... I like Hula, and I love Hawaiian music.
Immigrant Stories presented by Playback Theatre is an interactive performance at La Peña Cultural Center. Audience members can share personal stories of their histories, and then actors and musicians will translate those stories into improvised theater pieces. The evening performance is dedicated to honoring the experience of immigrants.
MICAYA: I love La Peña because they're always bringing interesting artists...There can be some of the most magical moments when you allow them to spring forth.
“Return of the Cypher” takes place every Sunday at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco. It's a free live hip hop show with a hot house band, freestyling, beatboxing and dancing. It’s hosted by DJ Kevvy Kev.
MICAYA: I know Kev, he's been around for a long time doing what he does, and I respect him very much...it's kind of turned into - and I'm using his words - 'church' these days.
