Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Michelle Lynch Reynolds: program director at Dancers’ Group which presentsBay Area Dance Week kicking off on 4/22.

Reynolds told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this week around the Bay.

Grisha Coleman’s echo::system-treadmill dreamtime, running in place happens at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on Friday, 4/15, through Sunday, 4/17. It’s a performance that uses treadmills, along with audio and visual media, to explore how people interact with the environment. Between shows the space is an installation where visitors can  engage with the treadmills and activate digital simulations of landscapes.

REYNOLDS: I’m excited about this work because Coleman comes from a thoughtful and rigorous artistic lineage.

Oakland Ballet Company

Oakland Ballet Company presents A Cappella-Our Bodies Sing tonight, 4/14, through Sunday, 4/17 at the Malonga Casquelourd Theater in Oakland. The performance, which melds dance with live music, includes new choreography by Val Caniparoli, Janice Garrett & Charles Moulton, and Graham Lustig, and features live accompaniment by the Berkeley Community Chorus Singers, Nona Brown and the Inspirational Music Collective, and Vajra Voices.

REYNOLDS: A lot of classical ballet is done to music with no voice or lyrics, so it’ll be interesting to see how the dancers and singers play off of each other.
