This Stanford grad student was one of the first Trump travel-ban detainees

Nisrin Elamin Abdelrahman is a Stanford doctoral student in anthropology. A citizen of Sudan, she was flying back to the United States from her academic field work when President Trump issued the first iteration of his travel ban.

As a result she was detained at JFK airport. This is her story:

"It just makes me angry because I just feel like it's dehumanizing to be told, what you went through needs to happen to keep our country safe. Who has the right to feel safe and who doesn't?"

This story comes from the Stanford Storytelling Project, an arts program at Stanford University that seeks to help students identify and share the stories that surround them. The managing editor of their podcast series “State of the Human”is Jake Warga, who also teaches courses in podcast production at Stanford. Special thanks to Helvia Taina, An-Li Herring and Eileen Williams, who also worked on this piece.
