San Francisco is spending more than $4.8 million to cover the costs of transit issues, law enforcement, and other expenses that go with hosting Super Bowl parties and associated activities. Why didn't city officials arrange for that money to be reimbursed?
Yesterday, supervisors Jane Kim, John Avalos and Aaron Peskin tried to introduce legislation to get that money back and ensure the city doesn't get stuck with the bill when it hosts big events in the future. Emergency legislation needs unanimous support to pass right away. That wasn’t happening, so the vote was postponed until next Tuesday.
KALW's Ben Trefny sat down with Supervisor Kim to ask her what went wrong with planning to pay for the Super Bowl festivities and how she's hoping to fix it.
Jane Kim: "Santa Clara did it right. They negotiated in advance. They got a cost analysis. And they asked the NFL and the host committee to pitch in for those costs. We did not. We got it wrong."
