  • The name Full Pink Moon came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month’s celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.

  • 1828 --- In Vienna, Austrian composer Franz Schubert gave his only public concert. 
  • 1871 --- The Paris Commune was formally set up.
  • 1872 --- An earthquake felt from Mexico to Oregon rocks the Owens Valley in California, killing 30 people. California, with the large San Andreas Fault running through the entire state, is a prime area for earthquakes. At 2:30 a.m.  a large quake hit Inyo County in the Owens Valley of central California. Worst-hit was Lone Pine, where 52 of the town’s 59 homes were destroyed, killing 27 people as they slept. The ground moved a full seven feet horizontally in some places near Lone Pine. Major buildings in every town in Inyo were also seriously damaged.
  • 1878 --- Hastings College of Law was founded.
  • 1920 --- “This Side of Paradise” is published, immediately launching 23-year-old F. Scott Fitzgerald to fame and fortune.
  • 1937 --- The cities of Dilley, Texas, and Crystal City, Texas each erected a statue of Popeye, the cartoon character.
  • 1945 --- The battle of Iwo Jima ended.
  • 1953 --- Dr. Jonas Salk announces on a national radio show that he has successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio. In 1952–an epidemic year for polio–there were 58,000 new cases reported in the United States, and more than 3,000 died from the disease. 
  • 1961 --- The Beatles performed at the Casbah Coffee Club, West Derby, Liverpool.
  • 1964 --- The musical "Funny Girl," starring Barbra Streisand, opened on Broadway.
  • 1964 --- Pete Best, who was The Beatles drummer before Ringo Starr joined the group, appeared live on the TV show "I've Got a Secret." 
  • 1969 --- A group called Women Strike for Peace demonstrate in Washington, D.C., in the first large antiwar demonstration since President Richard Nixon’s inauguration in January. The antiwar movement had initially given Nixon a chance to make good on his campaign promises to end the war in Vietnam. However, it became increasingly clear that Nixon had no quick solution. As the fighting dragged on, antiwar sentiment against the president and his handling of the war mounted steadily during his term in office.
  • 1969 --- 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' by Marvin Gaye is number 1 on the U.K. singles chart.
  • 1969 --- The TV movie "Marcus Welby" was seen on ABC-TV. It was later turned into a series. 
  • 1969 --- John Lennon and Yoko Ono began their "bed-in" for peace in Amsterdam. 
  • 1971 --- East Pakistan proclaimed its independence, taking the name Bangladesh.
  • 1975 --- The city of Hue, in northernmost South Vietnam, falls to the North Vietnamese. Hue was the most recent major city in South Vietnam to fall to the communists during their new offensive.

  • 1979 --- The Camp David peace treaty was signed by Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at the White House. The signing took place 6 years to the day that Egyptian President Anwar Sadat took over the premiership and said "the stage of total confrontation (with Israel) has become inevitable."
  • 1979 --- Earvin “Magic” Johnson leads the Michigan State Spartans to a 75- 64 victory over Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game. The most watched college finale of its time, the game established Magic vs. Bird as a rivalry for the ages, and would catapult both players to NBA superstardom.
  • 1983 --- The U.S. performed an underground nuclear test at the Nevada Test Site.
  • 1989 --- The first free elections took place in the Soviet Union. Boris Yeltsin was elected.
  • 1997 --- Following an anonymous tip, police enter a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, an exclusive suburb of San Diego, California, and discover 39 victims of a mass suicide. The deceased–21 women and 18 men of varying ages–were all found lying peaceably in matching dark clothes and Nike sneakers and had no noticeable signs of blood or trauma. It was later revealed that the men and women were members of the “Heaven’s Gate” religious cult, whose leaders preached that suicide would allow them to leave their bodily “containers” and enter an alien spacecraft hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet.
  • 1999 --- Dr. Jack Kevorkian was convicted of second-degree murder for giving a lethal injection to an ailing man whose death was shown on "60 Minutes."
  • 2000 --- The Seattle Kingdome was imploded to make room for a new football arena.
  • 2007 --- The design for the "Forever Stamp" was unveiled by the U.S. Postal Service.
