When you drive along the new eastern span of the bridge, you get a great view of crews dismantling the old eastern span. It’s not an easy thing to do -- crews have to proceed carefully to avoid what the Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Projects website calls a “dangerous spring action effect.”
So, they’ve got a lot on their minds. And then, there’s the cormorants.

LINA MISITZIS: It’s like the birds are the only ones who haven’t gotten the message yet that there’s a new bridge.
ROBERT IKENBERRY: It’s like we can tell them, “this is what you’re supposed to do,” but they seem quite comfortable, and they love the old bridge.
