On the May 13th edition of Your Call, Sociologist Matthew Desmond discusses his new book “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.”
Evictions used to be rare and at times sparked riots, but now they’re a common reality. The majority of renters dedicate over half of their income to housing costs. Many are one emergency or unexpected event away from eviction and homelessness.
Desmond says, “Eviction is a cause, not just a condition of poverty. If we want to erase poverty in America we must do something about the stark lack of affordable housing in our cities because without stable shelter everything else falls apart.”
