Bids to build SF Central Subway are $100 million over city's estimates

The bids are in to build San Francisco’s Central Subway project – and the price tag will be over $100 million more than the city expected.

The Central Subway will be a 1.7-mile tunnel under the heart of the city for Muni’s T-Third light rail line. The subway will finally provide a connection from the up-and-coming South of Market neighborhood to densely populated Chinatown.

International Film Festival kicks off in San Francisco

Tonight is opening night for the San Francisco International Film Festival – the longest running film fest in the Americas is in its 56th year, and this is its first run under the executive direction of film producer, Ted Hope, the new head of the San Francisco Film Society. Hope produced or executive produced 69 films over a span of four decades, including American Splendor, 21 Grams, and In the Bedroom. He is considered by many to be a father of the independent film movement in the U.S. He came by our studios to talk with KALW’s Hana Baba about independent films and what’s in store at the festival.

One Sunday afternoon at a fitness center in San Jose, a chorus of yelling and cheering can be heard: “Leave me alone. I don’t know this man. This man in the blue shirt is bothering me. Go away.”

It sounds like someone is being seriously threatened but instead it’s eight women demonstrating what they’ve learned after 22 hours of self defense training with Impact Bay Area, at the Morning Crane Healing Arts and Fitness Center.
