Examining the healthcare system through its public waiting rooms

One serious effect of the recession is many people’s inability to afford health care. And when people aren’t insured, they bring their medical problems to the only place required to take them: the public hospital emergency room.

In Oakland, that emergency room is at Highland Hospital. The documentary The Waiting Room takes us into the lobby and behind the scenes with the doctors, nurses, and patients who spend their hours there. KALW’s Holly Kernan spoke with director Pete Nicks.

In January of 2011, 38-year-old Lamar Deshea Moore walked into the Detroit Police Department's sixth precinct and opened fire. Two officers were hit in the head with shrapnel, a commander was shot in the back, and a fourth officer was shot in the chest, although a bulletproof vest saved her from serious injury. "As you can imagine, utter chaos and pandemonium took place," Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. said at the time.

I'm worried about Mitt Romney. The guy just might be running the worst campaign ever. And yes, that includes the print ads for organic hemp underwear, not to mention McCain/Palin in '08, which currently holds the gold standard for lousy campaigns. 

But we're talking bad at a whole new level here. Bad like a dumpster behind a fish market during a garbage strike bad. Bad like a $3 Avengers DVD bought off a cardboard table in Times Square with Russian subtitles bad. Bad like Todd Akin at a NARAL benefit bad.
