Naturalist Bernie Krause

Famed natural sound recordist Bernie Krause is our special guest this Saturday 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond".  He talks about his early career in professional music and how he made the transition to naturalist and bio-acoustitian.  Krause will take us on a sonic tour to some of his favorite wilderness areas and talks about his new book "The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World's Wild Places."  Saturday, 3/30 at 3pm.

"Folk Music & Beyond" pays tribute to Joni Mitchell, who turns 70 later this year.  Our special guest this Saturday (1/19) at 3 pm will be Dina Maccabbee, music director of "Under Cover Presents:  Joni Mitchell's Blue", a masterful mashup of Bay Area musicians who each cover a different song from the album, infusing it with their distinctive sound and personality.

Leonard Cohen Special

Listen this coming Saturday at 3 pm for All Things Leonard, our tribute show to the great Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. The Conspiracy of Beards will join us in the KALW studios.   This 20-man a capella ensemble sings the songs of Leonard Cohen in multi-part harmonies.

Folk Music & Beyond welcomes master musician Ross Daly from the Grecian isle of Crete.  He draws upon a number of popular and classical idioms mainly from the Balkans and Middle East, but also from North Africa and Central and South Asia, incorporating elements of each into his compositions and renditions of traditional repertoire.

The Shook Twins

The Shook Twins are Katelyn and Laurie Shook,  identical twin sisters who also happen to be enormously talented musicians from Portland, Oregon.  They stop by the KALW studios to perform their highly original and imaginative  songs on Folk Music and Beyond this week.  Saturday, October 20 at 3pm.

Music and conversation with folk singer Judy Collins, from an interview recorded in 1998. Collins talks about her memoir "Singing Lessons" and her struggles with alcoholism, depression and the death of her son. Musical highlights include "Send In The Clowns", "Suzanne", "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", "Bread and Roses", and "Amazing Grace."  This encore broadcast airs this Saturday 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond."

The Real Vocal String Quartet returns to Folk Music & Beyond for another live appearance.  Their music covers a lot of territory - classical, jazz, rock, Appalachian folk, West African and Brazilian.  They'll perform songs and instrumentals from their new CD "Four Little Sisters."   Saturday at 3pm.

Enjoy the music of Neil Young and highlights from the new Bridge School Concert's 25th Anniversary recordings on this week's Folk Music & Beyond.   You'll hear some of the biggest names in rock and popular music playing their songs unplugged-Bruce Springsteen, Fleet Foxes, Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Pearl Jam, Norah Jones, The Who, and of course, Neil Young & Crazy Horse.   Saturday 9/15 from 3-5pm.  (Listen through 9/22 via KALW's Local Music Player.)

Live music by two of the headliners at the upcoming San Francisco Free Folk Festival.    The Americana duo Misner & Smith will be in at 3 pm, performing their original songs and talking about their roles in the musical "Woody Guthrie's American Song."  At 4 pm, Melody Walker and Jacob Groopman perform songs from Melody's new debut CD "Gold Rush Goddess." 

FM&B highlighted three fabulous new CDs by The Chieftains, Loreena McKennitt, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops this week.  In the first hour , a concert recording by Loreena McKennitt and her trio from her new CD "Troubadours On The Rhine."  Listen anytime this week via KALW's Local Music Player.

KALW's Saturday music hosts join forces to present a five-hour folk extravaganza of continuous live music performed  by some of the Bay Area's finest talent.   Enjoy the Scottish fiddling of Alasdair Fraser, the powerhouse vocals of Teresa Trull and Barbara Higbie, the original songs of Caren Armstrong, and the homegrown bluegrass of Them Boys and the Sycamore Slough String Band.  Here's the schedule:

 

Genticorum on FM&B

The French-Canadian band Genticorum from Quebec performed live this Saturday (4/14)  on Folk Music & Beyond.  This talented trio is at the forefront of  Quebecois music and is among the many young bands leading the revival of interest in the old folk traditions of Quebec.  Members of Genticorum are Pascal Gemme on fiddle and foot percussion, Yann Falquet on guitar, and Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand on flute and bass.

Our special guest this Saturday is French  musician Gabriel Yacoub, the talented singer-guitarist who  spearheaded the French folk revival movement of the 70's and 80's with his band Malicorne.  This is an encore broadcast from 2003, featuring musical selections from Malicorne's albums and songs from Gabriel Yacoub's solo recordings.

Folk Music & Beyond welcomes members of Agapi Mou (“my love” in Greek), a new Bay Area band performing the songs and tunes of Greece, Albania, Turkey, and Armenia.   Agapi Mou includes violinist and singer Aya Davidson, clarinetist Greg Jenkins, Alan Davidson on laouto and Michael Garibaldi on percussion.  Listen anytime this week via KALW's Local Music Player.

 

Veteran Irish Folk Musician Mick Moloney and fiddler Athena Tergis will stop by the KALW studios this Saturday at 4 pm.  They'll play a few tunes and talk about Mick's research into the music of Irish-Americans and their contributions to vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley.

The great Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and guitarist Dennis Cahill return to Folk Music & Beyond for a live performance this Saturday February 25th at 3 pm.  Hayes ranks among the most innovative and distinguished fiddlers playing traditional music today.

Now on KALW's Local Music Player: Bay Area Baroque ensemble Musica Pacifica's live performance on Folk Music & Beyond. 

Members played selections from their latest recording "Dancing In The Isles: Baroque and Traditional Music from England, Scotland, and Ireland."  Judith Linsenberg on recorder, Elizabeth Blumenstock on baroque violin, Shirley Hunt on baroque cello, Charles Sherman on harpsichord, and John Loose on percussion.
