A Patchwork Quilt

The KALW programmers who comprise the station's "Folk Zone" - JoAnn Mar and Bob Campbell of Folk Music & Beyond, Kevin Vance of A Patchwork Quilt, and Peter Thompson of Bluegrass Signal - recognized a common commitment to presenting live music on the radio featuring some of the Bay Area's finest local talent.  In 1999, they decided to dedicate one Saturday of programming to a combination of the three shows: a live broadcast, direct from the KALW studio. They called it the "On Air Folk Festival," and it was such a success that they've repeated it at least twice a year ever since.  Here's what aired last Saturday...listen anytime this week via KALW's Local Music Player!

Saturday, 1/14 at 5pm (listen NOW via KALW's Local Music Player!).  Host Kevin Vance offers his award-winning broadcast special in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.   Excerpts of speeches given by Dr. King will be interspersed with musical selections both historic and topical relevant to the struggle for civil rights.  Musicians we'll hear will include Sweet Honey In The Rock, Pete Seeger, and Stevie Wonder.
