How San Francisco helped Meklit Hadero find her voice

Born in Ethiopia, local musician Meklit Hadero lived all over the map until she landed in San Francisco almost eight years ago. The singer-songwriter was a resident artist with the de Young museum, is a TED Global fellow, and worked with the Red Poppy Art House and the Mission Arts and Performance Project.

Today’s Local Music: Before the Brave

Call it Folk Rock or call it America, the style of music featured here is all over the place these days. This particular band, from San Francisco, is known as Before the Brave. They list Ryan Adams and Arcade Fire among their influences.

They’ll be opening for Thao & the Get Down Stay Down – another Bay Area band – on Saturday March 2 at the Great American Music Hall, as part of this year’s Noise Pop festival.

True Life Trio

We'll give you the low-down on two festivals opening in the Bay Area in March.  The Jewish Music Festival starts this weekend and some of the festival's musicians will perform this Saturday 3 pm in the KALW studios.  The True Life Trio perform original songs and folk tunes from the Balkans, the Americas, and beyond.  Klezmer fiddler Michael Alpert will also be on hand to play a few tunes.  The Crossroads Irish-American Festival opens on March 9th with a cornucopia of music and literary events.
