All week long we've been playing this sound, and asking you to guess what exactly it is and where exactly in the Bay Area we recorded it.

All week long we've been playing this sound, and asking you to guess what exactly it is and where exactly in the Bay Area we recorded it.

This auditory guessing game is part of Audiograph, a crowd-sourced collaborative radio project mapping the sonic signature of each of the Bay Area’s nine counties. By using the sounds of voices, nature, industry, and music, Audiograph tells the story of where you live, and the people who live there with you. Every Thursday, we reveal the origins of that week's sound on Crosscurrents, and here in weekly blog posts.

We've got our party hats on and our noisemakers blaring -- this week, Audiograph turns one!

It's been one year since Audiograph debuted on KALW's airwaves, and to celebrate, we've put together a short collection of some of our favorite sounds that you can listen to in the player above.

Our sonic treasure hunt starts up again this weekend with brand new sounds for the new year. And, as always, feel free to call us anytime at 415-264-7106 and let us know what sound in the Bay Area we should record next.

This month, the state opened its new health insurance marketplace, called Covered California. It’s a way for people who are uninsured to purchase health insurance plans that meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

On opening day, Covered California was busy. The website saw almost a million hits, and close to 60,000 people tied up their phone lines.  Waits of over 30 minutes were common.

High above the Bay, at the top of Mount Tam, is a little shack—up on stone tower, just that much higher above the peak where it sits.  It’s called the Gardner Lookout, and it’s one of two fire lookout towers in Marin County.

KALW’s Martina Castro asked reporters with the San Quentin Radio Project currently serving time there to imitate the sounds of their daily lives. Take a listen.

At its heart, California’s food economy is all about agriculture. Our state produces almost half of the fruits and vegetables consumed in the United States. In the Bay Area, one of our biggest crops is grapes. And right now, it’s harvest time-- it started on August 1st and could run through late fall.
