The success of Bay Area Bike Share depends on one place: downtown San Francisco. Back in August, the program. made a well-calculated gamble and stuck half the bikes in an area covering downtown, the Financial District, and South of Market. Basically, if bike share doesn’t work there, it won’t work in the Bay Area.

SF Bay Area Bike Share launches Thursday

Bay Area Bike Share will launch its pilot program on Thursday. The $7,000,000 program, which is run by the regional Bay Area Air Quality Management District and city transit agencies, will roll out 700 bikes at 70 kiosks in heavily trafficked commuter areas of San Francisco, San Jose, and three other Peninsula cities.
