Folk Music & Beyond: Joan Baez & Bob Dylan

Aug 19, 2016

What do Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and KALW have in common?  They're all turning 75 this year!  Tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond", an encore broadcast of an interview with biographer David Hajdu on his best-selling book "Positively 4th Street:  The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi & Richard Farina.  Hajdu talks about how the lives of these four musicians intersected during the 60's and how their friendships and rivalries inspired their artistic ambitions and creativity.

Bob Dylan at 75: A Bay Area History on Fog City Blues

May 25, 2016

Bob Dylan turns 75 on May 24. His first formal concert in the Bay Area took place in San Francisco on November 25, 1964; his most recent was October 30, 2014 in Oakland (he and his band return next month for a pair of shows in Berkeley).

Go ahead, ask Matt Jaffe anything. Just know that your question will likely lead the young singer/songwriter from Mill Valley on a musical detour before he gives you the answer you’re after.

For example, ask how he and his band, The Distractions, were chosen to support Blues Traveler, the Eighties jam band, on their national tour and he’s reminded of one of his influences.

“Well, there’s a great X song. It’s called “It’s Who You Know.”

Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes tonight on Fog City Blues

Nov 12, 2014

In 1967, Bob Dylan and several members of what became The Band got together in upstate New York. For months, they played and played – and recorded as they went along. It took 8 years for some of the music to come out officially, but in that time, the legend of The Basement Tapes grew. Bootlegs were passed around, little hints of the bigger treasure that existed somewhere.

Bob Dylan's birthday

May 24, 2014

It's Bob Dylan's 73rd birthday today.  We'll celebrate.

We'll hear his songs sung in Women's voices, such as Joan Baez, Odetta, Nanci Griffith, and a singer from Bhutan named Lhamo Dukpa.

A Patchwork Quilt can be heard Saturdays at 5pm on 91.7 FM KALW in San Francisco and online at kalw.org.

The voice you’re hearing now is unmistakably that of Bob Dylan. No, he’s not part of the Bay Area local music scene, but a project called “Highway 61 Revisited” is.

Funny Songs this Sat. 3 pm

Jun 27, 2013

"Folk Music & Beyond" tickles your funny bone this Saturday (6/29) 3 pm with humorous and satirical songs by  Loudon Wainwright III, the Austin Lounge Lizards, the Bobs, Richard Thompson, Two Nice Girls, Greg Brown, and the Chicken Chokers.   The great Bobster himself will make a cameo appearance.

If you look back at the origins of rock music, or Rock and Roll, as it was known in the 1950s, you hear that the new sound borrowed elements from gospel, rhythm & blues, and country.

This song reminds KALW's Devon Strolovtich of time he spent living in Paris, which is where he first learned to play it on the guitar.
