We Became Owls is an alternative Americana band from Oakland. Songwriter Andrew Blair and multi-instrumentalist Ross Warner began creating, writing and composing music together in middle school. Now they're joined by upright bassist Doug Keen, vocalist and banjo picker Kelly McFarling and either Andrew Laubacher or Kyle Caprista on drums.

The T Sisters are a contemporary folk band from Oakland, California. Songwriters Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen are joined on stage by upright bassist Steve Height and Andrew Allen Fahlander on mandolin and guitar. The vocally-driven five piece will perform at the Sixth Annual “Backyard Concert” taking place Saturday afternoon, July 25th, in Santa Rosa. Doors open at 4pm.

Listen to "Folk Music & Beyond" this Saturday at 3 pm for live performance by singer Chris Webster and guitarist Nina Gerber.  The soulful vocals of Chris in combination with Nina's exquisite guitar playing give their songs a special resonance and power, from gut-wrenching ballads to gentle ballads.  Chris and Nina have been performing together for the last 25 years and they'll perform a few songs from their new duo recording "Apple Blossom Lane."

Briget Boyle is a singer-songwriter, guitar player based in Oakland. With training in fields as diverse as Balkan folk singing, African drum and dance, Swedish massage, and theatre tech, Briget is an engaging and complex performer who brings a lifetime of discovery and struggle to her music. She joins host Devon Strolovitch live in the studio this Wednesday 3/11 at 9 pm.

Jeremiah Lockwood is a scholar and a story-teller; a singer, instrumentalist and composer with with an expansive knowledge of musical traditions and techniques that spans from The Carolinas to West Africa to the synagogues of his youth. Son of composer Larry Lockwood and the grandson of the legendary Cantor Jacob Konigsberg, Jeremiah began his musical career playing on the streets and subways of Manhattan performing with Piedmont Blues master Carolina Slim. Jeremiah is also the front man for The Sway Machinery, whose new album, Purity and Danger, has just been released.

In 1967, Bob Dylan and several members of what became The Band got together in upstate New York. For months, they played and played – and recorded as they went along. It took 8 years for some of the music to come out officially, but in that time, the legend of The Basement Tapes grew. Bootlegs were passed around, little hints of the bigger treasure that existed somewhere.

Five hours of live music coming your way on KALW 91.7, hosted by JoAnn Mar, Kevin Vance, and Peter Thompson  We'll be showcasing some of the Bay Area's finest local talent on Saturday October 25th from 3 to 8 pm.

3:00 pm  Linsey Aitken & Ken Campbell:  This talented duo from Scotland performs original songs inspired by traditional, classical,  and contemporary music, where historically all three genres of music were interlinked in Scotland’s musical identity.

"Folk Music & Beyond" welcomes Nykken to the KALW studios this Saturday at 3 pm.  This Bay Area trio performs "Scandinavian music with teeth" on a variety of instruments--the Swedish nyckelharpa, the Norwegian hardanger fiddle, the Celtic harp, the button accordion, and the hardanger cello!

5 stages of live music.  44 singing and instrument workshops.  36 dance classes.  All part of the San Francisco Free Folk Festival June 21st & 22nd.  "Folk Music & Beyond" will preview festival highlights this Saturday 3 pm and feature live performance by two of the headliners--The Rowan Brothers and Celtic singer Amelia Hogan.

The Trinity Trio makes its debut on "Folk Music & Beyond" this Saturday (5/31) at 3 pm.  Diana Rowan on Celtic harp, Todd Denman on uilleann pipes, and Eamonn Flynn on organ.  Their music covers ancient Celtic chants, plaintive Eastern European songs and straight up gospel, with energetic detours via Irish jigs & reels.  Diana describes their sound as "massive, deep, and spiritual."

Just Added!  Solas, one of this country's leading Irish-American bands, will be stopping by the KALW studios this Saturday for a live performance.  Led by talented multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan, Solas has been called "exciting" and "brilliant."  Thistle & Shamrock calls Solas "Irish America's most influential band."  Solas will perform songs from its latest CD "Shamrock City," a tale of immigration, tragedy, corruption, and discrimination based on the true-life story of Michael Conway.

3:00 pm  Brass Farthing is an ensemble of stalwart lads that sings songs, raises good cheer, and otherwise makes merry in the company of friends both old and new. Their songs cover many periods and they perform historical, traditional, and contemporary compositions in traditional styles.

Finest Kind, the a cappella trio from Ottawa, Canada will be our in-studio guests this Saturday 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond."  They are among Canada's leading singers in the "Anglo-Celtic" tradition.  Their harmony vocals have been called "soaring and glorious" by fellow Canadian musician David Francey. They've been together since 1991 and their repertoire spans British Isles, Celtic, American roots, Canadian, Hank Williams, Carter Family, Rudyard Kipling, old time, bluegrass, and everything in between.

It's five hours of continuous live music performed in the KALW studios this Saturday 3 to 8 pm, featuring some of the Bay Area's finest talent, hosted by JoAnn Mar, Kevin Vance, and Peter Thompson.  Here's the line-up:

3:00 pm  Xandra Corpora, former lead singer with the Bay Area funk-blues band Con Brio.  Her powerful, expressive voice has been called "strikingly soulful."

Music and conversation with folk singer Judy Collins, from an interview recorded in 1998. Collins talks about her memoir "Singing Lessons" and her struggles with alcoholism, depression and the death of her son. Musical highlights include "Send In The Clowns", "Suzanne", "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", "Bread and Roses", and "Amazing Grace."  This encore broadcast airs this Saturday 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond."

Local musician Kelly McFarling wrote her song “Atlanta” as an ode to her hometown, but she didn’t write it – or any other song, as a matter of fact – until she settled into her current home in San Francisco. In this edition of Bay Area Beats, McFarling tells KALW’s Martina Castro why she credits San Francisco with helping her launch her musical career, and better understanding the idea of home.

New and recent releases:  from the Irish traditional band Altan (pictured), singer-songwriter Richard Shindell, and the Bridge School Concerts 25th anniversary collection.  Plus an interview with blues singer-guitarist Eric Bibb who talks about his new CD "Deeper In The Well."  Saturday 3-5pm.

Live music by two of the headliners at the upcoming San Francisco Free Folk Festival.    The Americana duo Misner & Smith will be in at 3 pm, performing their original songs and talking about their roles in the musical "Woody Guthrie's American Song."  At 4 pm, Melody Walker and Jacob Groopman perform songs from Melody's new debut CD "Gold Rush Goddess." 

FM&B highlighted three fabulous new CDs by The Chieftains, Loreena McKennitt, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops this week.  In the first hour , a concert recording by Loreena McKennitt and her trio from her new CD "Troubadours On The Rhine."  Listen anytime this week via KALW's Local Music Player.

KALW's Saturday music hosts join forces to present a five-hour folk extravaganza of continuous live music performed  by some of the Bay Area's finest talent.   Enjoy the Scottish fiddling of Alasdair Fraser, the powerhouse vocals of Teresa Trull and Barbara Higbie, the original songs of Caren Armstrong, and the homegrown bluegrass of Them Boys and the Sycamore Slough String Band.  Here's the schedule:


Genticorum on FM&B

The French-Canadian band Genticorum from Quebec performed live this Saturday (4/14)  on Folk Music & Beyond.  This talented trio is at the forefront of  Quebecois music and is among the many young bands leading the revival of interest in the old folk traditions of Quebec.  Members of Genticorum are Pascal Gemme on fiddle and foot percussion, Yann Falquet on guitar, and Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand on flute and bass.
