KALW On-Air Folk Festival this Saturday

Apr 23, 2013

It's five hours of continuous live music performed in the KALW studios this Saturday 3 to 8 pm, featuring some of the Bay Area's finest talent, hosted by JoAnn Mar, Kevin Vance, and Peter Thompson.  Here's the line-up:

3:00 pm  Xandra Corpora, former lead singer with the Bay Area funk-blues band Con Brio.  Her powerful, expressive voice has been called "strikingly soulful."

Music and conversation with folk singer Judy Collins, from an interview recorded in 1998. Collins talks about her memoir "Singing Lessons" and her struggles with alcoholism, depression and the death of her son. Musical highlights include "Send In The Clowns", "Suzanne", "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", "Bread and Roses", and "Amazing Grace."  This encore broadcast airs this Saturday 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond."

Local musician Kelly McFarling wrote her song “Atlanta” as an ode to her hometown, but she didn’t write it – or any other song, as a matter of fact – until she settled into her current home in San Francisco. In this edition of Bay Area Beats, McFarling tells KALW’s Martina Castro why she credits San Francisco with helping her launch her musical career, and better understanding the idea of home.

New and recent releases:  from the Irish traditional band Altan (pictured), singer-songwriter Richard Shindell, and the Bridge School Concerts 25th anniversary collection.  Plus an interview with blues singer-guitarist Eric Bibb who talks about his new CD "Deeper In The Well."  Saturday 3-5pm.
